Sod Watering Guide:

How to Water Newly Laid Sod for a Healthy Lawn

Fresh sod can give your yard an instant transformation, but improper watering can ruin the investment. Here’s how to water your new lawn correctly to ensure it takes root and thrives for years to come.

Initial Watering

Water immediately after installation. The soil beneath the sod should be moist to a depth of 3–4 inches. Use a sprinkler to provide even coverage, and make sure all areas are soaked, especially edges and seams.

First 2 Weeks

Water daily during the early morning hours. Sod should remain consistently moist but not saturated. If the sod is drying out, it may shrink and pull apart at the seams. Light foot traffic should be avoided during this stage to prevent damage.

Weeks 3–4

Reduce watering to every other day. By now, roots should begin growing into the soil. Check by gently tugging at a corner; if it resists, roots are developing well. Water deeply to encourage deep root growth.

After 4 Weeks

Transition to a regular watering schedule, 2–3 times per week depending on weather and soil type. Continue to water early in the morning for best absorption and to prevent fungal issues.

Bonus Tip

Avoid evening watering, which can promote disease and fungus. Also, be mindful of local water regulations and seasonal restrictions.
